Russia's New Stealth Fighter

Some background and general information, see youtube video below:
Russia's first stealth fighter intended to match the latest U.S. design made its maiden flight boosting the country's efforts to modernize its rusting Soviet-built arsenals and retain its lucrative export market.
The Sukhoi T-50's flight comes nearly two decades after the first prototype of the U.S. F-22 Raptor took to the air, and Russian officials said it will take another five years for the new jet to enter service. Still, the flight marked a major step in Russia's efforts to burnish the faded glory of its aviation industries and strengthen a beleaguered military.
The sleek twin-engined jet closely resembling the Raptor flew for 47-minutes from an airfield at Sukhoi's production plant in the Far Eastern city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur. Development of the so-called fifth-generation fighter has been veiled in secrecy and no images of it had been released before the flight.
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin hailed the flight as a "big step forward," but admitted that "a lot remains to be done in terms of engines and armament."
Craig Caffrey, an analyst for Jane's Defense Procurement-Military Aircraft, said the new fighter is "hugely important," both for modernizing the aging Russian air force fleet and retaining export markets.
The T-50 should offer the Russian Air Force a significant boost in its capabilities and ensure that it remains one of the best equipped air forces in the world.
For those countries that don't traditionally purchase military equipment from the U.S. it will be the only fifth generation aircraft available.
The NPO Saturn company said in a statement that the jet has new engines, but military analysts suggested that they were a slightly modernized version of the Soviet-era engine powering the Su-27 family of fighters.
"It's a humbug," said independent military analyst Pavel Felgenhauer. "It's just a prototype lacking new engines and a new radar. It takes new materials to build a fifth-generation fighter, and Russia lacks them."
Putin said Friday the first batch of new fighters is set to enter an Air Force evaluation unit in 2013 and serial production is set to begin in 2015.
Russian military analysts were also skeptical, pointing at a history of delays in the program and other Russian weapons projects.
"The schedule will likely be pushed back as usual," said Alexander Konovalov, the head of the Moscow-based Institute of Strategic Assessment, an independent think tank.
Russia's prospective Bulava intercontinental ballistic missile has failed in at least eight of its 12 test launches, dealing a blow to Russia's hopes of making it a cornerstone of its nuclear arsenal. Officials have blamed the failures on manufacturing flaws resulting from post-Soviet industrial degradation.
Felgenhauer and other observers said the fighter program, which depends on hundreds of subcontractors, has been dogged by similar problems.
Russian officials have said the new fighter, like the Raptor, will have supersonic cruising speed and stealth capabilities. Its pilot, Sergei Bogdan, said in televised remarks that it was easy and pleasant to fly.
While officials saw the new fighter as essential, some analysts said the country has more pressing needs.
"There is no mission and no adversary for such plane," Konovalov said, adding that the Russian military lacks a modern communications system and satellite navigation. "It would be more expedient to fit modern avionics to older generation jets."
===>The U.S. administration decided to quit buying the F-22 Raptor, the world's most expensive fighter jet at more than $140 million apiece, effectively capping its production at the 186 already ordered.

Submarines: Here are some interesting pictures I thought I would share with you today about modern attack submarines

This is the SSN 718, a U.S. Nuclear powered Delta Class Attack Submarine with three Polar Bears just wondering around for a look see. The photo is real and was taken in October 2003 at the Arctic Circle.
Photo courtesy of the United States Naval Archives.

Russian Typhoon class ballistic missile submarine.
Some people claim this picture is fake and was created with Photoshop because this class Russian Sub is too large for these waters. Fake or other wise, it's interesting. If you live in California near San Diego or San Francisco it's common to see U.S. Nuclear powered submarines off the coast.

Flamethrower

Source: U. S. Military Archives-

M2A1 Flamethrower

WWII, 1945, U.S. M2 Flamethrower:

M2A1-7 U.S. Military Flamethrower, component details:

About Flamethrowers and the U.S. Military:
The M2 flamethrower (M2-2) was a man-portable backpack flamethrower that was used in World War II. Although its actual "burn time" was around 7 seconds and the flame was only effective out to around 33 meters, it was still a functional weapon that had many uses in the war. However, with the later arrival of tanks and, especially, flamethrower tanks, the need for infantrymen to expose themselves to fire became unnecessary as tanks offered greater protection while still delivering the effective damage.
As some were sold off, the majority of them were also scrapped when they were declared "obsolete."

M2A1-7 was a flamethrower used by the American troops during the Vietnam War. It is the updated version of the WWII M2-2 unit used during WWII. It has four controls:
Back of the rear grip: firing safety catch.
Front of the rear grip: firing trigger.
On top of the front part: igniter safety catch
Under the front part: igniter trigger.
Some U.S. Army flamethrowers have a front hand grip with the same shape as the rear hand grip. In these models the igniter controls are on the front hand grip, arranged in the same way as the rear hand grip controls. The M2 was replaced by the M9A1-7 flamethrower which was used in Vietnam. The M9A1-7 was replaced by the M202A1 FLASH.

Basic Acid Bomb

Disclaimer: This is for information purposes only, it is not intended for use. I have never tried this, nor would I, and I don't think anyone should!
Warning: Possession of explosives homemade or otherwise, are illegal in the United States unless you have a license.
This was emailed to be some time back.

WARNING:
Handling of dangerous chemicals like acid is extremely dangerous and requires training and proper safety equipment.
Mixing chemicals together such as an acid with a reacting base is hazardous and may cause severe injury even death. There is no way to predict when one of these types of homemade bombs will actually go off.

What's an acid bomb?
A plastic bottle filled with an acid and a reacting base.
Acid bombers make use of the same type of chemical reaction that causes vinegar and baking soda to bubble up when you mix them together. The Acid bomb makers fill a bottle with hydrochloric acid or something else with a low pH, and add a strong base, like drain-clearing liquid. They might replace one of these ingredients with aluminum foil, which can react with either an acid or a base.
Then, they shake it up.
If they're using the right kind of base, the combination of the chemicals will produce a gas.
For vinegar and baking soda, it's carbon dioxide.
The gas builds up pressure inside the sealed bottle until it explodes.
An acid bomb, which is also called a "bottle bomb" or a "MacGyver bomb" doesn't have a timer to set or a fuse to light, and you can't predict exactly when it will explode.
If your device works, its contents should begin to bubble after you shake it up, and the plastic bottle may swell before it bursts. The whole process generally takes a minute to begin, which supposedly gives the bomber a short time to make a getaway.
The video clip below shows how long one acid bomb may take before it ignites.

See you on Twitter and Facebook later.

Molotov Cocktail Explosive Device

Disclaimer: This is for information purposes only, it is not intended for use.
Warning: Possession of explosives homemade or otherwise, are illegal in the United States unless you have a license.

Note: This was emailed to be sometime back for posting.

WARNING:
Ensure that a safe distance is maintained when throwing the Molotov cocktail. Caution others, such as troops, against dropping the device. Throw it in the opposite direction of personnel and flammable materials. Do not smoke while making this device.
Do not toss over your head as the fuel make leak out.

What is a Molotov Cocktail?
The Molotov cocktail, also known as the petrol bomb, gasoline bomb, or Molotov bomb, or simply Molotov, is a generic name used for a variety of improvised incendiary weapons. They are frequently used by rioters due to the relative ease of production.
The bombs were named after the then Foreign Minister of the Soviet Union, Vyacheslav Molotov.

The Incendiary Device or Bomb:
In its simplest form, a Molotov cocktail is a glass bottle containing gasoline (petrol) fuel usually with a source of ignition such as a burning cloth wick held in place by the bottle's stopper. The wick is usually soaked in alcohol or paraffin, rather than petrol.
In action the wick is lit and the bottle hurled at a target such as a vehicle or fortification. When the bottle smashes on impact, the ensuing cloud of petrol droplets and vapor are ignited, causing an immediate fireball followed by a raging fire as the remainder of the fuel is consumed.
Other flammable liquids such as wood alcohol and turpentine have been used in place of petrol. Thickening agents such as tar, strips of tire tubing, sugar, animal blood, XPS foam, egg whites, motor oil, rubber cement, and dish soap have been added to help the burning liquid adhere to the target and create clouds of thick choking smoke.
Thus there are variations to this device but the what makes it work is any flammable liquid and a glass bottle.

Development and Use:
On 30 November 1939, the Soviet Union launched a war against Finland after a futile year and a half campaign to persuade the Finnish government to cede territory to the Soviet Union and give up some sovereignty by conceding specific military and political favors. The Finnish Army, facing Red Army tanks in what came to be known as the Winter War, borrowed the design of an improvised incendiary device that had been used in the just concluded Spanish Civil War (July 1936—February 1939). In that conflict, General Francisco Franco ordered Spanish Nationalists to use the weapon against Soviet T-26 tanks supporting the Spanish Republicans in a failed 1936 assault near Toledo, 80 km south from Madrid.
The United States Marine Corps developed a version during World War II that used a tube of nitric acid and a lump of metallic sodium to ignite a mixture of petrol and diesel fuel.
Important Note: While Molotov cocktails may be a psychologically effective method of disabling tanks and armored vehicles by forcing the crew out or damaging external components, most modern tanks cannot be physically destroyed or rendered completely inoperable by Molotov cocktails.

I will be on Twitter later today, I hope.
I am getting quite a few responses and followers to my new Facebook Page, I thank you all.

HCBs - Homemade Chemical Bombs

Disclaimer: I have not tried to build any of these myself and don't personally know anyone who has.
Warning: Possession of explosives homemade or otherwise, are illegal in the United States unless you have a license.

Post: This post is in response to some who have over the course of this blog asked me to explore explosive devices.

These range from a simple smoke bomb to teargas to something deadly.

Emailed to me last year-
Background on HCB:
Homemade Chemical Bombs (HCBs) are easily constructed out of every-day materials and chemicals. Toilet bowl cleaner or drain cleaner and tin foil mixed in a capped soda pop bottle are among the most common, and perhaps the most toxic, combination of materials. The mixture of isopropyl alcohol and chlorine or dry-ice and warm water and mixed in a capped water bottle yield a similar result.
A study found a total of 29 HCB events occurred from January 1, 1993 to March 31, 2003. The majority of HCB events, 83%, occurred during 2000-2003 and had associated explosions. Three events were responsible for producing injuries to 26 persons. Further analysis revealed that in 2 of the 3 events that produced injury, the person making the bomb became a victim. Sodium hypochlorite, sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid, and otherwise unspecified acids were among the chemicals used. A total of 18 events occurred on school property and at least 22 (76%) HCBs were made by juveniles.

For this to be effective as a WMD large quantities of various agents would be needed, thus when large quantities of chemicals of any kind are purchased, a license is needed and the items sold are supposed to be flagged by federal authorities.

WW II - Type 2 Rifle Grenade Launcher with Grenades

Source: U.S. Military Archive Files

The Type 2 rifle grenade launcher was an attachment for the Japanese Type 38 and Type 99 rifles that allowed them to fire special hollow charge grenades. It was a copy of the German Schiessbecher grenade launcher. Two grenades were produced for the launcher: a 30 mm calibre grenade and a larger 40 mm calibre grenade, both designated Type 2. The launcher sits over the end of the barrel, held in place with a clamping device. A special crimped blank cartridge or wooden bullet is used to fire the grenades.
The rear of the grenades is pre-rifled to mate with the rifling in the launcher. The rifling ensures that the grenade is spun in flight, giving it stability and arming the rotational fuze. Both grenades use a largely identical fuze, which makes up the rear part of the grenade. On impact, momentum carries the striker assembly forward, overcoming the resistant force of a creep spring into the detonator.

Video: Modern Binary Explosives

Source: http://www.liveleak.com/
This is getting serious.
Something to think about if you fly...
This or some variation is probably what was used on the Detroit Flight Christmas Day by the Nigerian Terrorist Bomber.
The would be bomber had almost 3-ounces, which is probably 50 to 100 times as much as shown and used in this video demonstration.

Many people have sent me emails and links for explosive devices and ask me to post them.
This one is worth showing and sharing with the world.

Your comments are appreciated, I like to hear your thoughts on this.

Destroyer, USS Ross

Some Naval History ...

Built at the Bath Iron Works, Bath Maine, in the United States.
This Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, and others, have proven to be durable workhorses in the U.S. Navy.
Over the 22 years since construction of the first one began at Bath Iron Works, the ship has steamed into the record book: The destroyer's production run has outlasted every other battleship, cruiser, destroyer and frigate in U.S. Navy history. The only warship in production for longer was the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier.
